Harmon Bailes
A painter and character. Knows a lot about art, particularly Urdu art. Used to teach in West Akron and has wonderful stories about those days. Thinks women are terrific, as, of course, they are!

Marlene Bailes
Retired Malamart & Malamart book designer (25 years) and still works for M & M freelance. A great hostess. The Urdu reading group which grew out of Dorolina Flapp’s classes at the Women’s Library often meets at her home.

Windy Beet
One of my closest friends. Works 3 days a week for the Women’s Post Office and 2 days editing the journals of the West Akron Parenthetical Society. Degree in resounding languages. Les, her husband, died of an unsightly tumor a year ago last May.

Dexter Belting
A cabinet maker/carpenter, now working as a technician at the Women’s Museum. He made the fabulous wardrobe/bed in by former apartment. Dexter has done almost everything and has lived all over the world. He generally dresses totally in black. Dexter is cosmic. Man.

Ned Click
I know Ned through my boss, Camella Grass. He teaches vagrancy at West Akron Normal and does summer outreach in West Canada. A true transmopolitan.

Tess Cartwyle-Warmyrton
Tess was my boss’s part-time secretary. She was also once secretary to Veronica Lake’s hairdresser. She, her husband Gaylord, and their three sons dance together on Thursday.

Nelly Damper
Nelly is one of my oldest friends. She is English from West Country, bilingual in English English and American English. Nelly breeds English spaniels, strings English harps and will stuff a tomato at the drop of a hat.

Megan Benny
Megan works in the company secretariat of West Akron Telecom, after many years at the Women’s Zoo.

Bonnie Ekblad
Bonnie’s a sociologist by training but is now, I think, working in computers. My mind’s temporarily gone blank. We met at the Women’s Lottery and cemented the friendship when I mother-henned a multi-disciplinary research group she was in at the Parenthetical Society in the mid-70s.

Donald Godworth
Donald is an ex-naval commander, married, with 2 grown up kids. He now manages the West Akron helicopter project. Speaks Urdu a bit. Sings (baritone?) in the Verbatim Choir.

Dorolina Flapp (I fell off the alphabet!)
Bas-Frisian. My intellectual mentor. Without her example and encouragement I never would have studied Bas-Frisian at the University. Super bright, very wed read (particularly in poetry - she has translated Sandburg’s Fog and Eliot’s Cats into Bas-Frisian) and full of energy.

Rupert Flapp
A graphic artist, mostly engravings and etchings. Won best print at the West Akron Academy a couple of years ago and is having a show at Slovenly’s, 58 Whilom St. (490-5100) sometime soon.

Rupert Jinks
A black undertaker who recently set up his own firm in Orlando. Married to Nelly Damper.

Rupert ‘Hi’ Jump
Lecturer at West Akron Normal, in purblind, among other things. Bright and well-informed. Has a great sense of the ridiculous. Speaks fluent Spleen.

Pete Krptk
A friend from Semblance Court. Half Urdu, half Bas-Frisian. A high-powered executive secretary and very persuasive. He decorated my toilet and All my doors.

Jelly Marsh
Jelly used to live at Semblance Court. We were cronies together on the roof committee. She has recently been made head of two recycling bins at West Akron Mulch.

Hal Nicodemus
A Semblance Court neighbor. Hal is a counselor for HEFT, a charitable organization which helps people to overcome weak knees. Hal weakened his own knees praying for rain in Timbuktu.

Ola Pjastup
A Norwegian! Well, a Laplander, actually, who lives in Trondheim with her husband and two daughters. We have a great time together when I go there and if all goes well, we’ll be going to West Trondheim in the summer. Ola used to teach Bas-Urdu but is now with a team of people, preparing a computerized catalogue of books of the various faculties of the University of Nils.

Cass Plankton
I call him the “local intellectual,’’ as in, “I feel like a good discussion. I’m just darting down to the local intellectual.” When he’s not managing his fixed income funds, Cass stalks stalks at the Women’s Arboretum.

Liz Plankton
Liz works in marketing and has a real penchant for animals - particularly the family of marmots which live by the side of the West Akron loop line between Havenot and Empathy.

Marvin Sunderville
Marvin is a drapery person working on recycled flags. He’s also training part time to be a therapist. An intriguing combination. He and his girlfriend, Killebrew, have just had their first child.

Lotus Unborne
Lotus flunked Dorolina Flapp’s Urdu class. But she’s a really talented graphic artist, best known for the West Akron calendar.

Warner Wigbold
Head, I believe, of the Geography Department at West Akron Normal. His particular research interest is the Moribundese (AKA the Fundament). We meet particularly to attend the Yogurt Seminar. He writes excellent letters. All in fountain pen!
